The focal distance is about 6 inches and the microscope can slide up the post plus the focal mechanism provides an additional 6 inches, but if you routinely need more, you can flip the scope 180 degrees and place the base on something to raise it. The microscope also includes a 64-bulb LED ring light with power supply (LED-64S). The barlow lens may need a lot of working distance to focus. Customer reviews for this product varied. Some users found it good for amateur use, others said it was great for home laboratory, and some said it was of very good quality even better than the more expensive models. One user had an issue when the light ring adapter threads stripped out, but they were able to make a new one out of aluminum.
