- La presente edición se completa con un documentado estudio preliminar sobre Mary Shelley y la gestación de «Frankenstein» a cargo de Antonio José Navarro. Mary Shelley (1797-1851) fue hija del pensador radical William Godwin célebre autor del revolucionario ensayo titulado «Political Justice» y de novelas de tradición gótica como «St Leon» y «Caleb Williams» y de Mary Wollstonecraft, autora de la más ardiente defensa sobre la educación y derechos de la mujer que se hubiera hecho hasta entonces, expresada en su obra «Vindication of the Rights of Woman». En 1814 conoció al poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley, que sería el amor de su vida, y con quien huyó al Continente en 1814. En la noche del 17 de junio de 1816, después de una velada en compañía de Lord Byron, Percy B. Shelley, John W. Polidori, Matthew G. Lewis, entre otros, en la que se discutió sobre el galvanismo, los experimentos del doctor Erasmus Darwin y la posibilidad de descubrir el principio vital y conferirlo a la materia inerte, Mary tuvo una pesadilla en la cual un estudiante obsesionado con la creación de vida artificial despierta y contempla horrorizado a su espantoso engendro. Este sueño fue el primer atisbo de una Criatura que se ha elevado por sí misma al pedestal de los mitos básicos del terror. A partir de esta visión de pesadilla, Mary Shelley construyó «Frankenstein, o el moderno Prometeo», una historia que ha estremecido a generaciones de lectores y cuya actualidad permanente han garantizado las numerosas adaptaciones al cine. Una historia destinada no sólo a despertar el horror, sino a proponer una reflexión moral sobre la naturaleza humana y la génesis del Mal.
